Score:5, Offtopic

It's my blog. The name is a reference to a quirk in the Slashdot moderation system that allows a post to have a negative (in this case, offtopic) moderation, but be scored 5, the maximum positive score. Basically, there's no point to it, but it may be good. There'll be all sorts of computer crap in here...

OneTrueKeyboard, and my retirement from Folding@home

First things first... some Slashdotters are wondering why I'm quitting F@H. So, here goes...

Read this thread over at The Tech Report's folding forum. It's the thread that caused me to quit F@H. Search for "Find-a-Drug" and "FAD", and I'm sure you'll find the other comments that I'm too lazy to look up right now.

Now, on to OneTrueKeyboard...

I'm officially launching it today. It's a discussion forum for buckling spring keyboards, such as IBM's legendary Model M.

Check it out, if you're a keyboard snob like me. It's at http://s13.invisionfree.com/OneTrueKeyboard/. (Yes, I know, I went with them. It's free, though, and the ads are Google ads, so it's not annoying.)

Pong: San Andreas, and this really neat Opera affiliate thingy

First things first... Pong: San Andreas is in Release Candidate stage. That's right, it's almost done. By all reports, the gameplay is good - the graphics need a little work, and then it'll be ready.

I need a host, though. My current host for this project, drfish of the Tech Report forums, cannot support this project through a Slashdotting.

And, yes, there's a Hot Coffee mode in there.

Now, on to the Opera Affiliate Program. Basically, I link to them using a special link, and they give me credit for every click on that link. Here's the thing, though. When I get 250 (unique, I believe) clicks, I get a FREE license for Opera 8. Yep, you heard that right. I've got 27 as of this writing. Note that there's an "Opera Web Browser" button down there below the obligatory "I Power Blogger" button. That button is my special link. (I've also linked in my signatures at The Tech Report, CPU-Museum.de, and the Ctrl-Alt-Del forums)

Games that should be rated Adults Only

In response to Jack Thompson's maneuvers against "penises" and "labia" in games, I'm compiling a list of games with nudity modes available (with a mod or not):

City of Heroes
Publisher: NCsoft
Developer: Cryptic Studios
Current Rating: T
Suggested Rating: M
Reason: A glitch in the game allows one to view female characters' undergarments

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Publisher: Rockstar
Developer: Rockstar
Current Rating: M
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to make females topless

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Publisher: Rockstar
Developer: Rockstar
Original Rating: M
Current Rating: AO
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to enable a hidden sex minigame. Therefore, the game was rerated AO. However, a new version of the game will be released that will not have this content that could corrupt our youth, and will be rated M once again.

Half Life 2
Publisher: Vivendi
Developer: Valve
Current Rating: M
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to make Alyx nude

The Sims 2
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: Maxis
Current Rating: T
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to remove blurring and add genitalia to Sims while they are copulating

Tomb Raider
Publisher: Eidos
Developer: Core Design
Current Rating: T
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to make Lara nude

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Publisher: Activision
Developer: Neversoft
Current Rating: T
Suggested Rating: M
Reason: A glitch in the game allows one to see female characters' bras

Unreal Tournament 2004
Publisher: Atari
Developer: Epic Games
Current Rating: M
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to make Tamika nude

World of Warcraft
Publisher: Blizzard
Developer: Blizzard
Current Rating: T
Suggested Rating: AO
Reason: A mod is available to make female night elves nude

I'm currently still looking for games with these modes. Please post in the comments if you know of any. I will update this post as needed.

In case you guys are lacking humor, this is an attempt to break the ESRB by getting every game rated AO.

Reading Penny Arcade today...

...I found this: Gaze Ye Upon It, And Be Amazed

Pretty funny, IMO.

Now, for something serious: Some spyware/trojan horses have been known to put porn on computers. HP/Compaq computers come with spyware. I think they've got some that come from the factory in a RAID configuration. So, it's possible...

It's AALIIIIIVEE!

Yep, I've got the laptop!

It's working pretty well - nice and snappy with Windows 2000.

The only problem? Heat - I don't know if the fan's dead, or what, but it runs REALLY hot (~80 C outside of the UltraBase, 90+ C in it). Part of me says to stop folding...

Well, I've got the new laptop...

...but it's a doorstop...

Basically, the network controller and modem are conflicting, and giving me this error:
ERROR
Resource Conflict - PCI Network Controller
Bus:00, Device:0A, Function:00
ERROR
Resource Conflict - PCI
Bus:00, Device:0A, Function:01

It won't let me boot, either.

So, I called the place that sold it to me, and they gave me an RMA number. I'll drop it off sometime soon, and they should be able to fix it while I wait.

Anyways, it seems like a nice lappy otherwise. Small, light, well designed.

So, you guys get a comparison pic for now (note: the ThinkPad is in the UltraBase - that doesn't do it justice when it comes to thickness):
